Scott specialises in commercial law, intellectual property and information technology. He heads Duncan Cotterill’s award-winning Intellectual property team.
Scott has a diverse practice encompassing commercial and company law, intellectual property (IP) and information technology (IT). His clients include government departments, listed companies, charities and a range of start-up companies.
Scott provides a wide range of commercial advice to his clients on such matters as acquisitions and dispositions, joint ventures, restructuring, and the preparation and negotiation of commercial contracts.
In the IP/IT area, Scott advises on the licensing, development and protection of IP portfolios, branding strategies, registered design and copyright issues, trademarks and licensing. This includes IP dispute resolution, trade mark and copyright infringement, passing off and Fair Trading Act issues.
Scott is a member of the Institute of Directors, the International Trade Mark Association and the Licensing Executives Society. He is also an Associate Member of the New Zealand Computer Society.

- The acquisition and divestment of businesses for both listed and closely held companies in New Zealand and cross border
- Commercial advice to New Zealand’s largest charity
- Incorporation and structuring of a number of Wellington-based information technology and high growth companies
- Obtaining Overseas Investment Commission consent for a number of strategic landholdings in the North Island
- Advising government departments on their intellectual property rights
- Advising on large ICT procurement projects in the public and private sector
- Advising a number of clients on their intellectual property strategy and the maintenance of their trade mark and domain name portfolios
- Notices of opposition to trade mark applications and applications to remove trade marks
- Advising on software agreements
- Copyright infringement and domain name disputes
