Forestry/ETS

Duncan Cotterill is a market leader in the provision of emissions trading scheme (ETS) related advice to the forestry sector. We act for a number of significant domestic and offshore forestry clients, advising on the implications of the ETS and assisting with the closing of domestic and international carbon transactions.

Oliver Roberts, a partner in our Christchurch office, heads up our Forestry/ETS team. Oliver has extensive commercial expertise coupled with detailed forestry/ETS knowledge and is rapidly becoming one of NZ's key legal advisors in this area.

Geoff Thompson, a Consultant and forestry expert based in our Wellington office, has close links with the Government and participates in Climate Change policy issues.

Recent Work

Some of our recent work in this area includes:

• Advising an Australian public company on all issues connected with the purchase of Kyoto compliant farmland for carbon farming
• Acting for a trust undertaking forest planting of errodable farm land and financing this by forward sale of carbon credits
• Managing the harvesting of two forests in Lower North Island
