Duncan Cotterill in innovative bond issue

National and trans Tasman law firm Duncan Cotterill has been immersed in the innovative philanthropic bond issue, recently announced by the University of Canterbury. The university plans to raise up to $100 million for major capital projects in New Zealand’s first such issue.

Partner Paul Dorrance, a commercial specialist, led the high-powered legal team, which included Duncan Cotterill’s leading taxation lawyers, Bruce Patterson and Grant Pearson, along with corporate partner Hamish Grenfell.

Dorrance said it was a huge job, given the complexity of philanthropic bond issues and the taxation requirements.

“It really drew on our resources across the board, requiring sophisticated taxation work through to minutely detailed drafting. We are delighted with the result.”

Dorrance said that such issues, which are more common in the U.S. and UK, are likely to gain traction here.
